Twitter is probably the most misunderstood of the social media platforms, especially for job seekers. People always ask the question "Why would I want to follow someone and why would they want to follow me?" It's not quite as stalker-ish as it sounds and can actually be quite useful in your job search.
The first step is to go to twitter.com and register. Create a name that is professional. Mine is my name, @sandividal. The Web site will allow you to create a brief bio and connect to your Web site if you have one.
After setting up the account, I suggest going to twellow.com and looking up areas of interest. You can also register your name and include links to other social media sites you are on to help people locate you.
The next step is to find a useable platform. My favorite is tweetdeck.com, but there are others as well. This gives you a chance to create favorites, perform search strings, and perform all the twitter functions in one place.
Hash tags or "#" are used so other Tweeters (or is it Twitterers?) can follow a particular topic. For example #jobs would pull up job-related Tweets. I search jobs and Central Florida on a regular basis to see what trends there are.
You can also search hash tags without going on Twitter by doing a Google search for #jobs.
Twitter will give you access to blogs and articles about job trends, tips on job search, and other relevant job-related information.
Some tweeters to follow for your job search are: @cfecorg, @jobangels, @hiringinflorida, @thejobsearch, @navinstitute, @workforcefla.
Please e-mail me if you have any questions and you can follow me @sandividal.
Until next time, — Sandi
