Ask Sandi

Jan. 28, 2010

By Sandi Vidal

When it comes to social media, the most social of the medias is Facebook. It is a great way to connect with friends, relatives and long-lost schoolmates. It is also a great way to connect with former co-workers.

I always tell people when I connect with them on Facebook that it is a personal site for me. I play Farmville, I collect flair and I comment on people's postings.

Facebook can be a great resource for networking when you join groups, and also when you reconnect with people and let them know what is going on in your world. You may find people who are able to help you make the connections you need for your next job.

One big caution: Be very careful with your security settings, and know who is tagging you in pictures. If you went to the bar last week and it wasn't pretty, you probably don't want the whole world to see it.

Facebook allows you to be a fan of pages, join groups and interact with a variety of people. It also gives people a glimpse of who you are. If you become a fan of non-employer friendly pages like "I get mad when my employer tells me what to do", it may not bode well for your future career.

Network away, but use this one with caution. Next week we will talk about Twitter and job searching.

Until next time,
— Sandi
